Office Ladies | Episode 232 - An Interview with Timothy Olyphant

Jenna [00:00:04] I'm Jenna Fischer.

Angela [00:00:05] And I'm Angela Kinsey.

Jenna [00:00:06] We were on the office together.

Angela [00:00:08] And we're best friends.

Jenna [00:00:09] And now we're doing the Ultimate Office Lovers podcast just for you.

Angela [00:00:13] Each week, we will dive deeper into the world of the office with exclusive interviews, behind the scenes details, and lots of BFF stories.

Jenna [00:00:21] We're the office ladies 6.0.

Jenna [00:00:26] Hello there.

Angela [00:00:27] Hi.

Jenna [00:00:28] We have a really, really fun episode today. I feel like we say that every week, but my gosh, if you don't leave with a smile on your face after you listen...

Angela [00:00:41] Also, we just love our job. So it is a fun thing. It's fun to get to do this.

Jenna [00:00:46] Really fun. I do. I love my job. I feel so fortunate that I love my job too, Ang.

Angela [00:00:53]  Oh yeah.

Jenna [00:00:55] My parents loved their jobs. My mom was a teacher. My dad was a plastics engineer. They loved what they did for a living and they always told me, We just hope that you get to have a career that you also love. Yeah, and I do.

Angela [00:01:12] What a gift, right?

Jenna [00:01:12] They supported me and my pursuit as an actress because they knew. Well, that's the thing she loves.

Angela [00:01:18] That's what makes her heart happy.

Jenna [00:01:18] Yeah. My sister's a teacher. It makes her heart happy.  It's a beautiful thing when that can happen.

Angela [00:01:24] Yeah.

Jenna [00:01:25] All right, well, listen, you all know that there are still so many people who were on the office that we have not talked to that we have wanted to have on the podcast. And today we get to cross one of those names off our list.

Angela [00:01:38] Yep. Today on Office Ladies 6.0. Timothy Olyphant is in the studio with us. You might know Timothy from his many movies and television roles, including the hugely successful shows Deadwood and Justified. Of course, you know, I loved him in The Mandalorian. And you know what? I did not bring it up on purpose because I didn't want to be a total nerd in front of him. I know I was already a geek, but I loved him in Mandalorian and, you know, on The Office, he played Danny Cordray, the top salesman in the Scranton Wilkes-Barre area. He was the salesman that Michael Scott eventually hires to work at Dunder Mifflin.

Jenna [00:02:16] Yes, the character of Danny Cordray was in two episodes that aired in the original broadcast, The Sting and Costume Contest. And Angela, you bring up in our interview that he was also in a deleted scene for Michael's last Dundies.

Angela [00:02:30] Yep.

Jenna [00:02:31] Now I love the set up to his character. In the Sting. Jim and Dwight are on a sales call to their client meeting at Frame Select, and they see rival salesperson Danny Cordray sitting in the lobby. I thought we should hear it.

OFFICE CLIP [00:02:51]  Crap. Danny Cordray is the worst. By worst, you mean the best. The best salesman ever. He works for us every paper over, and through steals more clients from Dunder Mifflin than anyone. That sort of situation is the worst. Also, he slept with Pam. No, he didn't. Tell him. Nothing happened. We went on a couple of dates. He never called me again. What? He never called you? I thought you said  it just fizzled. That's fizzling. I mean, someone has to start the fizzle. Yeah. I thought you started it. No, I liked him for a couple of days. Four years ago. You know, I have a kid with you, right?

Jenna [00:03:38] I just love this. There's so much information and history packed into these little couple of scenes.

Angela [00:03:45] I know this was a really fun Jim and Pam runner. We talk more about it, but it it was so fun how it kept popping up. Well, I just love that. And Jenna and rewatching this episode, it was so funny to me how all the Dunder Mifflin employees react to meeting Danny. So we just heard Jim and Dwight. But I also thought you should hear when Michael first sees them and then the whole bullpen. Sam helped me put these clips together. Let's hear it.

OFFICE CLIP [00:04:11] No, that's a male model. My God. Jansport backpacks. 10 or 15 years ago, you were a model for Jansport backpacks, were you not? Yes. Yeah. What's going on here? I knew it. I remember the one. You were like. Hey, let me introduce you to mr. Danny Cordray. He is going to be joining us as our new traveling salesman. Say hello to Danny. F*ck Me. Okay. You know what? No. Just.

Angela [00:04:45] That was a bleep. That was probably standards and practices. Because Kelly says, you know the F word.

Jenna [00:04:51] She does. Yeah. And listen, we've shared this before, but the character named Danny Cordray was inspired by our very own Randy Cordray. And I just love that his name made it on the show.

Angela [00:05:02] I know. Well, we always love hearing from you all. And several of you wrote in some great observations and comments about the character Danny Cordray. And we wanted to share.

Jenna [00:05:12] Yes. Starting with Ashley S. from Kaysville, Utah, who wrote in to say, I find it funny that Michael has a talking head referencing the killer in Scream two. One of the murderers is Timothy Olyphant. That murderer is now in the office. Ashley, this cracked me up. You know, I'm a horror movie fan. You know, I know Scream two. I held myself back from asking Timothy about Scream two in our interview because I didn't want to geek out too much. Let's hear this clip of Michael talking about Scream two.

OFFICE CLIP [00:05:49] I tried. I tried. I tried to talk to Toby and be his friend. But that is like trying to be friends with an evil snail. I feel like I'm dying inside. I feel like Nev Campbell in Scream two. She thinks she can go off to college and be happy. And then the murderer comes back, starts killing off all of her friends. Learned a lot of lessons from that movie. This is just one of them.

Angela [00:06:25] There's more. There's more lessons from Scream two.

Jenna [00:06:29] Well, Scream two was early in Timothy's career. I mean, he is playing a college student. He is so good in it. He is such a great villain. Like he always often is playing kind of like the nicer guy.

Angela [00:06:42] The hero guy.

Jenna [00:06:44] But always with a little darkness. It's interesting. We talked to him about it. Good catch. Ashley I loved it.

Angela [00:06:50] Well, we also got this fun catch from Carly F in Prospect Heights, Illinois. She said her and her husband were watching Justified, and they realized that Dave Koechner had a few episodes. She said they loved that Timothy and Dave Koechner had a few episodes together, even though they didn't have any together on The Office. But they were both traveling salesman. They also found it ironic that their joint episodes in Justified both take place in Florida, which is where Todd Packer ends up at the end of the office. My gosh. This is like a monk crossover, but it's a Justified the Office crossover.

Jenna [00:07:26] I just started watching Justified. It's really good. It's so good. I have not gotten to Dave Koechner yet.

Angela [00:07:32] I haven't either. I just started watching it too.

Jenna [00:07:35] Well, everyone, thank you so much for writing in. We used a lot of your questions in our interview with Timothy as well.

Angela [00:07:41] And, you know, we're so excited to reunite with him. And this really all came about, Jonah, because you ran into him last year.

Jenna [00:07:47] Yes. We were at a mutual friend's birthday party and I asked him if he would come on the podcast. He was so lovely. He said, of course, we did this interview right before our holiday break. And it was just such a great way to end the year.

Angela [00:08:01] It really was. He's so charming and he hung out with us for over an hour. We talked to him about his time on the office and so many other things.

Jenna [00:08:09] So let's take a short break. And when we come back, our interview with Timothy Olyphant.

Timothy [00:08:24] My goodness.

Jenna [00:08:26] Timothy Olyphant.

Timothy [00:08:27] Hey, how's it going?

Jenna [00:08:29] Good.

Angela [00:08:31] How cool to see you sitting across from us. You got a scarf on?

Timothy [00:08:34] Well, it's the season.

Jenna [00:08:35] Tis the season. Yeah.

Timothy [00:08:37] How you doing?

Jenna [00:08:38] We're good.

Timothy [00:08:39] How are the ladies?

Jenna [00:08:40] The ladies are good.

Timothy [00:08:41] How long have the ladies been in this building? It didn't start here. No, no, no. Like that. I'm going to try to get more. More in those moments right there.

Angela [00:08:52] Answers. We started at Earwolf, which was this great little space. And then Sirius bought Earwolf. And then we ended up renting this little space, which was cute, but like, we had a we have, I guess, a shower curtain that like, separates us from other from Sam and Cassi in the booth. It was sweet. It was cute.

Angela [00:09:11] But now we're with the folks at Audacy and we got real fancy building now.

Timothy [00:09:15] That's this is their floor. This is their building.

Jenna [00:09:18] This is their their nook.

Timothy [00:09:20] Their nook. And they get. And this space is your space.

Angela [00:09:23] Yes.

Timothy [00:09:24] Way to go.

Angela [00:09:25] Right, right, right.

Timothy [00:09:26] Look at you two. Yeah, That's really good. Pretty good.

Jenna [00:09:31] Doing all right.

Angela [00:09:32] We have these dohickeys, too.

Timothy [00:09:34] No. The whole thing.

Angela [00:09:36] Says office ladies on the microphone.

Timothy [00:09:37] Pretty swanky.

Angela [00:09:38] Yeah. Yeah.

Timothy [00:09:39] Who would have thunk?

Angela [00:09:40] I know, right? Two gals chatting about a show they're on?

Timothy [00:09:45] Just chatting about, here in Hollywood, there's a walk. There's the stars.

Angela [00:09:48] Yeah, the Walk of Fame.

Angela [00:09:49] We don't have one. Wait, Do you have a star?

Timothy [00:09:52] No, I don't have star.

Angela [00:09:53] I don't have a star.

Timothy [00:09:53] You know, every now and then you have these moments you like. Yeah. You're in show biz.

Angela [00:09:57] That's right. Well, razzle dazzle.

Jenna [00:09:59] I do feel a little show busy when I come here because I'm coming into the heart of Hollywood. You know, I when I first moved to L.A., I lived in West Hollywood. Yeah. And I went by all this stuff all the time. I moved out. I'm not in West Hollywood anymore.

Timothy [00:10:13] You left? Yeah.

Jenna [00:10:14] Yeah. All right, I'm jumping in. Okay, here we go. So, listen, we usually start with the same question. We usually ask people. How did they-

Timothy [00:10:22] They offered it to me.

Jenna [00:10:23] Your job in the office? You already know.

Timothy [00:10:29] You know, first I was first time caller anyway. I'm like, Yeah, listen, I got it. They got I got no story for you other than they offer it to me. And I said, Yes.

Angela [00:10:38] Wait, can we just go on record that Timothy listens to office ladies?

Timothy [00:10:41] Yeah.

Jenna [00:10:42] Thank you.

Timothy [00:10:43] For sure. Let's go.

Jenna [00:10:44] Wow. Yeah. They offered it to you. .

Timothy [00:10:48] They gave you the office because people are listening. You know that, right?

Angela [00:10:53] I love it.

Jenna [00:10:54] Well, I was actually going to start with another question, which was, how did you get your start in show biz? Like when in your life did you realize that you wanted to be an actor?

Timothy [00:11:05] I articulated it sometime in my early 20s.

Jenna [00:11:10] Okay. You said it out loud.

Timothy [00:11:13] Yes.

Angela [00:11:14] That's a big deal, though.

Timothy [00:11:16] I remember. I know. I may not have articulated it. I don't. Well, let me say this. I do remember articulating it to my wife. And we got married at 22. I just had turned 23. And she I do know that her response was, you've never mentioned this before. So I know that I when I so first started talking about it like 22, around there. Yeah.

Jenna [00:11:43] What inspired that?   Had you been in a like a college production or what?

Timothy [00:11:48] Nothing. Nothing. Now, when I was younger, I do remember thinking, I'd love to do that. I remember thinking, comedy stand up. I remember thinking that. And my mom said, You don't want to do that. Those people are on drugs and they do their divorce and they're on drugs. I don't know. And then at a certain point, I was like, Mom, you're divorced. So, you know, you're halfway there. Might as well be in show, right? So, yeah, never done it before. I had never done it.

Jenna [00:12:18] Wow. And so where do you go from there? You grew up in Modesto, by the way.

Timothy [00:12:24] Grew up in Modesto.

Jenna [00:12:25] We got a fan question about that. We asked people to write in and someone actually said, Meghan G from Albany said, My husband and I lived in Modesto, California. What does Timothy remember about growing up there? Folks are really proud of him.

Timothy [00:12:41] Well, that's very kind. Well, I mean, I don't I mean, I still my mom lives in Modesto. I still go to Modesto. I was in Modesto just in October. So, yeah.

Jenna [00:12:52] My favorite bread maker is in Modesto. Bonnie O'Hara. She has a home bakery, fresh breads and cookies and stuff.

Timothy [00:13:02] Wait. That might be my. Wait a minute.

Jenna [00:13:06] What? Wait, wait.

Timothy [00:13:08] Well, that can't be right. Is her name Bonnie? I'm forgetting the name, but the woman used to live across from my street, from my mother had made in her garage. She had a home bakery. Yeah, she may. And she was doing really well, is that Bonnie?

Jenna [00:13:24] Bonnie was your neighbor? Bonnie O'Hara. And so we need a moment to Google.

Timothy [00:13:30] You know, I'm looking in my contacts. No, I don't think it's her. Okay.

Jenna [00:13:36]  She does bread making for beginners. And I bought her cookbook. I started making bread thanks to her. But she has got a whole business in her. Like in her little home kitchen and she sells bread subscriptions.

Timothy [00:13:51] Now for a second there, I for a second there, I don't think, Bonnie, if I do know you, I'm really sorry because it's been a minute.

Jenna [00:13:59] But listen, if it's not, Bonnie, takeawayis that Modesto is the Mecca for breadmaking.

Timothy [00:14:06] That's some good bread.

Jenna [00:14:07] Yeah.

Timothy [00:14:08] I just finished a job in Finland, and the AD made the best bread.

Jenna [00:14:13] Homemade.

Timothy [00:14:14] Homemade bread. They. They're big on their bread. They're very healthy. Good breads in Finland, I guess Europe just has great bread. And, you know, people say like, if you don't want gluten, don't worry about it so much. They're in Europe anyway. As a wrap gift, he gave me the recipe.

Jenna [00:14:31] No.

Timothy [00:14:32] Gave me me a little notebook and a handwritten recipe? Try to convert it from metric. And we haven't made it yet, But that's the plan. This holiday, we're going to make the bread. Auntie. Auntie's bread.

Jenna [00:14:45] Love that.

Timothy [00:14:46] That first AD.

Jenna [00:14:47] I'm a bread enthusiast.

Angela [00:14:49] Jenna used to bring in, like, her yeast. Like in the bowl, right? Is that what it's called?

Timothy [00:14:55] Yeah, did you give it a name?

Jenna [00:14:56] Well, I would bring in my dough. My starter's name was Goldie.

Timothy [00:15:07] How long have you two known each other? Am I here to bring you together? Bring you closer.

Angela [00:15:13] I didn't know your starter had a name.

Jenna [00:15:14] Yes. it's a common thing. Because, yeah, you have to feed it every day. And I said it's like taking care of a goldfish. So I named it Goldie.

Timothy [00:15:23] You know, you're this close to having a second podcast.

Angela [00:15:27] You're going to be my replacement.

Jenna [00:15:28] All about bread.

Timothy [00:15:29] No, I mean,  you laugh.

Jenna [00:15:35] But I think it could happen.

Timothy [00:15:37] My God. For sure it could happen.

Jenna [00:15:40] Okay, back to your career.

Timothy [00:15:42] This is a show. You've built a monster show here, all based on one half hour comedy. Yeah.

Angela [00:15:51] Bread is bigger, bigger than the office.

Timothy [00:15:56] People love the office. People really love bread. I mean, it's a big deal.

Angela [00:16:01] Big deal.

Timothy [00:16:03] I'm just saying.

Timothy [00:16:05] You're here twice a week?  How many days a week are you in here?

Angela [00:16:14] Timothy's going to be in here on Tuesdays, guys.

Jenna [00:16:18] We'll bring you on.

Jenna [00:16:19] We have a network now.

Angela [00:16:20] We do. We have a network.

Jenna [00:16:22] You can have a bread podcast on our network if you want it.

Timothy [00:16:24] You have a network.

Angela [00:16:27] Yes, the Office Ladies Network.

Timothy [00:16:28] What the.

Angela [00:16:29]  Yeah.

Timothy [00:16:31] I've missed my whole show business.

Angela [00:16:34] Listen, Bread with Timothy. It could happen. Good. All right. What's our next question?

Timothy [00:16:41] Theme song by bread.

Angela [00:16:44] By bread.

Timothy [00:16:45] You know the band?

Angela [00:16:46] Yes.

Timothy [00:16:47] Yeah.

Angela [00:16:48] Okay. it writes itself.

Jenna [00:16:51] It really does.

Angela [00:16:53] We were we were going to ask you next, but like.

Timothy [00:16:56] I haven't said anything I remember about Modesto.

Angela [00:17:01] What is your favorite place to eat? Modesto. Like, what's your like? I know. Archer City, Texas. I go to Mearns for a cheeseburger.

Timothy [00:17:08] Wow. You know, I mean, the places I've been going to lately are not places I went to. Growing up in Modesto. I mean, growing up, when I think of like, where do you go to eat when you were growing up? I mean, we're like, we went to Arby's and we went to, you know, like Taco Bell tacos, you know, that kind of thing. It was kind of a fast food joint. There was an incredible I think it's still there. Mexican joint on the way out to Oakdale. I can't remember it, god I'm terrible. But that would be like that was great to go out there.

Angela [00:17:44] Mexican Food place on the way to Oakdale.

Timothy [00:17:48] I don't sound like I have. I really drifted far from.

Angela [00:17:51] Modesto's Golden Son.

Timothy [00:17:53] I really have, because we didn't really go out to it's not a go out to dinner town.

Angela [00:17:58] I know.

Timothy [00:17:59] You know. Yeah. Like my memories of food in terms of it's like going to get Winchell's on Sunday morning getting donuts or something.

Angela [00:18:08] Yeah, it's good, though.

Timothy [00:18:09] I don't remember. Like, foodie places. There's a little bit of that now because almost the whole country's got into food, right? Food places.

Angela [00:18:18] Fancy foodies.

Timothy [00:18:19] Yeah. So, yeah, now my childhood memories are just, you know, it was all about just roaming around. We, you know, canals and orchards and all that. That's the end of that story.

Angela [00:18:33] Right.

Timothy [00:18:34] Cake parties and in the orchard, you know. I mean, in the canal. Yeah. That was the teenage. Yeah. Times. Yeah.

Angela [00:18:40] Yeah. We had pasta parties when I moved back to the States.

Jenna [00:18:44] But I read that you were a swimmer.

Timothy [00:18:46] Swam. I grew up next to. We grew up next door to a place which still there called. It was at the time called the Modesto Swimming Racket Club. It was literally we had an old farmhouse. We had a field and a barn horse, chickens and stuff that and we could just walk through that over to the Racket club. And so my brothers and I all we just were there all the time, just running around. You know, it was a walk to school neighborhood and yeah, so they were.

Jenna [00:19:14] This is sounding really good to me right now.

Timothy [00:19:14] And we just yeah, So I swam and we all swam and played tennis, my brother and I. By the way, we're hosting a charity tomorrow, tennis charity. My brother and I, we've never done it before. First Annual only it was what we're calling it. The only we're raising money for this really great place called the Center for Reflective Communities. It deals with teen and young adult mental health. And so people want to go on there. They can hit the little plus sign and donate. And where it says subject, you can put in our thing, play for good, the only play for good and donate money. And God bless you because they do wonderful work for Lord knows the young people need some help these days.

Angela [00:19:55] Well, we'll share that. We'll put it in our Instagram stories with a swipe up and I'll show up with my racket.

Timothy [00:20:02] Let's go. Okay, bring it. We're playing Dingle's.

Angela [00:20:06] I love Dingle's.

Timothy [00:20:07] Okay, we're playing Dingle's and we've got like, I think there's like 16 or 17 players that are all coming and donating like 500 bucks to play and then like 16, 17 pros.

Angela [00:20:20] Oh gosh.

Timothy [00:20:20] So, you can hit with some pros! It's gonna be super fun.

Angela [00:20:26] Are you playing?

Timothy [00:20:26] I'm playing

Angela [00:20:27] Dingell's is so fun.

Timothy [00:20:28] You can come out and play a little bit, hit with one of our some of the pros and you can always say okay it's too much. I don't want to play anymore. Just hang out. And then there's alcohol.

Angela [00:20:36] Great. Dingles is you have to get cross court. Yeah. So like I have to hit cross court and then the person next to me hits cross court. Yeah. And then the first person that misses there, you can only do cross court. And when you miss, you yell dingle. And then the other ball that's active becomes a free ball for the whole court. Right? But what happens to me is the minute someone yells dingles, I like freeze. I freeze because I like. And then the ball goes moving past me. Yeah, because like, imagine someone next to you yelling Dingle is really loud. Dingle Wouldn't that make you.

Timothy [00:21:08] Yeah, it did. Right now I could see it on her face.

Jenna [00:21:10] I froze. I stopped talking as soon as you guys started saying Dingle's. I haven't said a word.

Timothy [00:21:15] We're doing it tomorrow.

Angela [00:21:17] Okay. Yeah. Okay. So now let's see. Okay. Back to the office. Had you seen the show before? Were you a fan of it? Did you know anyone?

Timothy [00:21:28] Yeah, I'd seen both versions. I knew Rainn.

Angela [00:21:33] Yeah.

Timothy [00:21:34] Rainn Wilson. When I first started acting in New York, he was my understudy in a play.

Angela [00:21:44] What was the play?

Timothy [00:21:45] Pretty sure that's true. It was called The Monogamist at Playwrights Horizons. By the way, I'm going to go see Rainn's Play Saturday closing night. I'm gonna see waiting for Godot on Saturday.

Angela [00:21:56] I saw it. He's great in it. Yeah, really good.

Timothy [00:21:59] Yeah.

Jenna [00:22:00] Okay. I have a question from a fan.

Timothy [00:22:01] Let's go.

Jenna [00:22:02] It's Amit R. From Edmonton, Alberta. Who wants to know on the office what was hardest to get used to? The improvising and scenes or learning to see the camera as a separate character. Take us back.

Angela [00:22:19] You're very great. Like right out of the gate at like, clocking the camera. Yeah, because some people that threw them off. But you we watched you look at the camera.

Timothy [00:22:28] I appreciate hearing that. I was about to answer that question with the question, which was I don't remember. Did I look at the camera once? I yes, it's all very vague, foggy to me. What I remember my experience. I don't remember you, do you? Am I on one episode or multiple episodes?

Angela [00:22:48] Two epsiodes and then you have a cameo.

Timothy [00:22:50] I hope that doesn't sound pretentious. I just don't know.

Angela [00:22:52] No, it's fine. You're in two episodes and then you have a little cameo for Michael's last Dundies, where Michael's sends the camera crew because Danny Cordray wins hottest in the office and it's in deleted scenes and I'm pretty sure it'll end up in the superfan episodes too. But yeah, so yeah.

Timothy [00:23:08] You do. I'm in a deleted scene in another episode?

Angela [00:23:12] Yes. Michael's Last Dundies.

Jenna [00:23:13] You're in two episodes and then you got deleted from a third.

Angela [00:23:16] But you'll probably be added back.

Timothy [00:23:19] And what's that scene.

Angela [00:23:21] You've won hottest.

Timothy [00:23:23] But I didn't show up for that.

Angela [00:23:24] You didn't.

Timothy [00:23:26] So how am I in it? Did they put me on the screen.

Angela [00:23:28] Michael has his TV screen. Yeah. And you. Your character says. Yeah. I said I couldn't be there, but Michael sent out a camera crew to my house.

Timothy [00:23:38]  I shot that.

Angela [00:23:39] Yes. You talk. It's you.

Jenna [00:23:42] You did it.

Timothy [00:23:43] I don't remember that. That's cool.

Jenna [00:23:47] Yeah, well, do you?

Timothy [00:23:48] I do remember getting the Dundee, though. And they send it to my house. Yeah, I got the little trophy.

Angela [00:23:54] Yeah.

Jenna [00:23:55] So, do you still have it? That's. That's hottest in the office.

Timothy [00:23:58] I don't know.

Jenna [00:23:59] That would be great to have for your shelf.

Timothy [00:24:02] Yeah.

Jenna [00:24:02] Yes.

Timothy [00:24:03] I have. I have two. And this will go next to it. Greatest World's Best podcast guest. Yay!

Angela [00:24:10] I have a mug.

Timothy [00:24:11] I have two world's greatest dads. I've won it twice.

Angela [00:24:18] That's so cute.

Timothy [00:24:18] Yeah, I've been a father for 25 years, but I've only won. I've only won it twice.

Jenna [00:24:23] And you have three children and only two awareded you.

Timothy [00:24:26] By the way, that's a good  question.  I don't know. I just like that I, for some reason, I have two of them. Yeah. Some. Somewhere along the line, they either forgot they gave me one or they're like, Let's get give it to him again.

Angela [00:24:37] Yeah.

Timothy [00:24:39] And I don't know if I am the world's greatest dad because I don't even remember who gave it to me or why or when I got it. I just know I have two. Well, and I've always liked having the two side by side. And I think for a second the Dundie might have been there. I'm a bit of a minimalist at the house. I don't tend to keep a lot of stuff.

Angela [00:24:56] That's good.

Jenna [00:24:57] That's smart.

Timothy [00:25:00] Turn that frown around, so I don't remember the looking at the camera bits. Okay. But it sounds like-

Angela [00:25:07] You did it really well.

Timothy [00:25:07] That's great. Okay, cool. I don't remember anything being difficult about the show. I remember. Other than I do remember laugh. I'm sure I screwed up what would have been a really good scene. Because with Carrell where I was, I just couldn't stop laughing because it was so intense and funny. And there's a little bit of disappointment still there that I could not keep a straight face.

Angela [00:25:28] Is that when you're trying to leave the building? =

Timothy [00:25:32] Yeah. So at least it's got a life somewhere because he's incredible. Yeah. And he's fully committed. And I'm quite certain I haven't seen it, you know, but that I'm the one busting out more than he is. I'm sure I'm busting up. And then. And that's making him then laugh. But he was really impressive.

Angela [00:25:51] Yeah. He doesn't break. Yeah, it's. He's like a statue. It's really hard to make him laugh.

Timothy [00:25:55] And he was very committed. I have fond memories of my experience, you know, just in general. I just remember enjoying the whole thing. And you guys are all wonderful pros. Great vibe. It had already been on the air for a while.

Angela [00:26:08] Yeah, it was season seven, but it was always so fun when someone new came in because that new energy that it would bring to the set. Sure. And I loved it so much. I rewatched it. The fact that Danny Corddry thinks Pam is a dork. And that's why.

Jenna [00:26:23] Do you remember the storyline.

Timothy [00:26:26] It's coming back to me now.

Jenna [00:26:27] Yeah. So we had gone on a couple of dates when she was.

Angela [00:26:32] Two dates.

Jenna [00:26:33] Two dates and it was supposed to be a third. But then you didn't call me back and. But you try to tell Jim that it was that I didn't call you back. And so I say, No, no, no, no. And then we will not leave you alone. We're like, He is. There's a great scene where he's like, Man, why didn't you call her back? And you're like, Are like, for real? You want to know why I didn't call your wife back for like, five years ago and you eventually admit that it is because you thought I was a little dorky.

Timothy [00:27:06] I do remember that, yes.  That's so wonderful.

Angela [00:27:08] It's such a great scene. And when you finally admitted that she's that Pam's a little dorky.  I watched it with my son, who's 16, and he turned to me. He goes, this is so cringey.

Jenna [00:27:20] Well, I'm dressed as olive oil. I'm in a full Halloween costume. Yes. And so I am, like being pretty dorky.

Angela [00:27:29] And she goes, would you call her dorky? She goes, okay. Excuse me. Like, it's so funny.

Timothy [00:27:37] I remember that, too.

Angela [00:27:37] Yeah, yeah, it's so fun. I love that storyline so much.

Jenna [00:27:42] I want to ask you about The Sting. That's the first episode where you show up and you're this Salesman. And Michael's going to try to figure out, why are you so good? You're this rival salesperson. Yeah. And so they set up that fake office. Yeah. And then Meredith  and Oscar come in.

Angela [00:28:01] Wait, her name is something Van Helsing.

Angela [00:28:07]  A lot of this is coming back to me now. But I do remember the sting. I remember that scene being in the office and. And her acting like a super agent in charge or something.

Jenna [00:28:18] Yes.

Jenna [00:28:18] Yeah.

Timothy [00:28:19] And people are coming in and out.

Angela [00:28:20] Yes. Because she starts to really hit on you. And so they're like, she's going to ruin it, send in Oscar. And then Oscar comes in and she's literally like, he's here to clean. He speaks no English. And then they send in Ryan the temp and she's like, That's Esteban. He does. He does floors like. So she keeps, like, thwarting their plans. Yes.

Jenna [00:28:41] It's really fun.

Timothy [00:28:43] It is a show. How long ago was that? It's a long time.

Jenna [00:28:47] My God. How long ago now? I mean, we probably shot that in 2010. Yeah, 15 years ago.

Timothy [00:28:55] Yeah, yeah, yeah. People still, like, you know.

Angela [00:29:00] Do you get recognized for Danny?

Timothy [00:29:02] Yeah, I'll get, you know, the occasional, like. Hey, were you in the office? Yeah.

Angela [00:29:08] That happens?

Timothy [00:29:09] That happens.

Angela [00:29:10] I mean, that's so wild because you have such a huge, larger than life other characters.

Timothy [00:29:15] It's a huge. And also you get it from, like, teenagers and stuff. Yeah. Amazing. That show that just keeps on giving.

Angela [00:29:22] Yes.

Timothy [00:29:23] How cool to be on. You guys were part of something that culturally relevant and huge.

Angela [00:29:30] We had no idea at the time.

Timothy [00:29:31] Kind of amazing. Yeah.

Angela [00:29:33] It was pretty wild.

Timothy [00:29:34] I mean, I don't have those kind of problems. You guys must get that craziness. People always go. They can't go to the airport. What's it like going to go to the airport?

Jenna [00:29:43] I can go a lot of places. I really fly under the radar and I always have. I don't know if it's like some sort of, like, special gift or something. I don't know. But I. Like I was once rear ended by the paparazzi who were chasing Christina Ricci, and I had to get out of my car and like exchange information with them. And they never took my photo. Like, that's that's like, how invisible I am to that world.

Angela [00:30:15] Well, I would challenge you to fly southwest to Austin and walk through that airport because you're going to get recognized a lot.

Angela [00:30:23] I think I can do it. I'll take that challenge.

Timothy [00:30:27] Let's take office Ladies on the road. We're going to film one.

Angela [00:30:30] I don't know, guys.

Timothy [00:30:31] We're going to film one.

Angela [00:30:32] I get recognized a ton at airports.

Jenna [00:30:34] Southwest Terminal in Austin.

Jenna [00:30:36] That's great.

Jenna [00:30:37] Very nice.

Timothy [00:30:38] It's in the budget. Let's go.

Angela [00:30:39] It's in the budget, we could go talk to people about bread.

Timothy [00:30:42]  I invited myself on the trip, by the way.

Jenna [00:30:46] You're in our spinoff show, Office Ladies on the road.

Timothy [00:30:48] Yeah, Office Ladies on the Road.

Angela [00:30:50] Come on. That's a fun show.

Jenna [00:30:52] You're our man on the street.

Timothy [00:30:53] Well, bread of the week.

Angela [00:30:55] Bread of the Week. Southwest Austin.

Jenna [00:30:58] We're building a network show by show right now.

Timothy [00:31:00] I mean, you guys have a network. This is what you.

Jenna [00:31:02] Will you please be in our next think tank meeting.

Angela [00:31:05] We have 44 episodes we have to fill.

Timothy [00:31:09] There have been already think tank meetings.

Angela [00:31:11] Yes, Yes.

Jenna [00:31:12] Yeah, we've got one coming up in January.

Timothy [00:31:14] They don't happen often. Well, yes, it's the holidays so you're shutting it down.

Jenna [00:31:18] We're taking some time.

Timothy [00:31:19] In January, you have the think tank.

Jenna [00:31:21] Yeah, we're gonna think tank it. In the episode costume contest. Michael says you remind him of someone, and Kelly says, Is it Josh Duhamel? Fan question from Keela V. in Texas. Do you often get confused for Josh Duhamel? Follow up, I heard he was on your Christmas card once.

Timothy [00:31:40] Yeah, So I've I've told this story before, so forgive me for it. So, yes, obviously I do. But yeah, he was in my he took a picture with we were at an event together. We'd never met. And as soon as we saw each other, started laughing. And while we were talking, one of the Dodgers, we were at a Dodgers event and a one of the guys asked him if he was going to be in any more Hit Man movies, which is a movie I did. And he asked Josh in front of me and it was really great. I watched him get mistaken for me in front of me. It was just wonderful. And then it occurred to me, I said, You know what? I got my whole family here. Would you? And he he knew right away. He was like, I'm in. You got it.

Angela [00:32:29] So great.

Timothy [00:32:30] So he took a picture with my wife and three kids and we you know, we sent it out as the holiday Christmas card. So my mom had it on the fridge and.

Angela [00:32:41] Didn't notice it.

Timothy [00:32:41] Didn't notice it.

Jenna [00:32:42] Didn't clock.

Timothy [00:32:42] My younger my brother called me. Said dude, mom had no idea. I had to point it out to her and she said I thought he looked taller.

Jenna [00:32:52] It's a good story.

Timothy [00:32:53] It's a great story. So yeah, me and Josh, a forever linked. Lovely guy, he was a great sport about it. It's kind of funny. It's funny. You guys have one of those?

Jenna [00:33:01] Yeah, I've got a couple. Yeah. Yeah. I would get Amy Adams and Isla Fisher.

Timothy [00:33:06] Okay. And. And have you spoken to them about it? Yeah, because you assume they also.

Jenna [00:33:11] Yes.

Timothy [00:33:11] Or maybe she says sometimes the paparazzis don't pay attention to me because they think I'm you. Yeah.

Jenna [00:33:18] They're like, go ahead, Jenna.

Timothy [00:33:19] Sometimes when I'm being ignored, I realize, oh you guys think I'm Jenna!

Jenna [00:33:24] Yeah. Exactly. One time at a party, Amy and I were both at the party, and the guy I was with at the time, he came up to me and he's like, my God, I'm so embarrassed. I just went up and I put my arm around Amy Adams. I thought it was you. I thought it was you. And I was like, nope, I'm over here. And. And then she came up and she was like, I met your date. It was so great to meet him. So, yeah, so we've, we've talked about it a little bit, but I don't, it's like I kind of see it.

Timothy [00:34:04] You also say, P.S. Don't put your arm around me in public.

Jenna [00:34:08] I was like, I mean, we're not together anymore.

Timothy [00:34:10] Yeah. See? Yeah. Yeah. Because he overstepped with somebody else. Do you get one?

Angela [00:34:18] I've gotten before a shorter version of Laura Dern. Like the short version. She's really tall, so. I don't know. That's. I don't know. I don't know.

Timothy [00:34:31] Yeah, but you don't have the doppelganger show biz doppelganger out there that you know you're being mistaken for. Because that's where we. . You know, I'll get giggles behind the counter, and then I realize they don't. They don't know who I am.

Angela [00:34:45] Yeah, right.

Timothy [00:34:46] They think I'm him.

Angela [00:34:47] Yeah. No, No. Although I really want to tell Laura Dern that someday that, like, Hey, I'm your short version.

Timothy [00:34:55] Yeah. Yeah.

Jenna [00:34:56] You should play her short sister in something.

Angela [00:34:59] Yeah.

Jenna [00:35:01] I want to ask you a little bit about Justified.

Angela [00:35:03] Yes.

Jenna [00:35:04] I have only just started watching the series, but I am loving it.

Timothy [00:35:08] Thank you.

Angela [00:35:08] Me too. My husband loved it.  And then he had me start watching it, and I love it.

Timothy [00:35:14] Thank you.

Jenna [00:35:15] Do you still have the hat?

Timothy [00:35:16] Never kept it.

Jenna [00:35:17] What?

Jenna [00:35:19] You didn't keep your hat.

Timothy [00:35:20] So keep that in mind with the Dundie, right? I didn't keep the hat.

Jenna [00:35:24] That is shocking to me.

Angela [00:35:25] What about from Deadwood? Do you have your star?

Timothy [00:35:28] No, I didn't keep it.

Angela [00:35:29] Do you take anything from sets?

Timothy [00:35:31] So, yes. In that, like a pair of jeans or anything that's practical.

Jenna [00:35:37] So you're like oo, I like the fit of these, I'm going to wear these. Nothing sentimental.

Timothy [00:35:43] No, I never take anything sentimental. I take things that have like, I could use some socks, right?

Jenna [00:35:48] Yeah.

Timothy [00:35:49] No, like, my kids will make fun of me like, if I buy something they'll be like, Dad bought a shirt. Because a lot of times I will just be wearing things that have like my character name or it either says like, you know, and they put inside either says Hero or it says like, Yeah, you know, Raylan. Yeah, I'll have like a pair of jeans and inside it just says, Raylan or Hero. Yeah, I'll have that, t shirts, I take all that. I always tell the costumer. I always say, Look, there's going to be some things missing. So I just I hope it's in the budget.

Angela [00:36:26] It's just clothes.

Timothy [00:36:29] And I will say because I always think to myself, what am I going to do with the hat? I mean, it's just going to sit there somewhere and take up space and I don't like having them.

Angela [00:36:39] You're minimal at home. And we've learned this.

Timothy [00:36:41] I'm a bit of a minimalist. When I first heard about that Marie Kondo.

Angela [00:36:47] Right.

Timothy [00:36:47] I was like, yeah. I got.

Angela [00:36:49] Like, I do it already.

Timothy [00:36:50] I'm there. But she added the little thank you for your service. Do you ever hear that that little quote that she does?

Jenna [00:36:56] As you throw it away?

Timothy [00:36:59] Yeah, I love that. And I did that, that and that.

Jenna [00:37:02] Thank you for your service.

Timothy [00:37:04]  Big fan of that. But I did keep a hat from the show. We did a thing. It's a spoiler, But we did a thing where there was a guy, a villain with a hat towards the very end of this show, the original show's ending, and I wore this hat. I took the dead guy's hat because he. He shot my hat, we had a whole story idea anyway. I took that hat and then had it refitted so that I could just wear, like, a free hat. Yeah, it was a little bit along that practical thing. I was like, I'd love to get a free hat out of this, but I don't want to want that hat, the D hat. So I got another hat. You wouldn't recognize it as the hat from the show, but because you just have it re blocked. I kind of wish I did that with the Raylon hat,  yeah, just took it and then just had it. I forget. You can just have a hat re blocked and just make it into, it's not even recognizable. It'd be a fun fact to say, this is the Raylon hat.

Jenna [00:38:04] But I just like how it looks.

Timothy [00:38:05] I just changed it around.

Angela [00:38:08] I have a little story for us. Well, two things. One, I have a question from Julio in Clinton, New Jersey. Julio says, Which office character would best survive the justified universe?

Jenna [00:38:21] I'm going with Creed. Okay. I think he is in that world. He's sort of a criminal, but also sort of not. He's questionable. I feel like a marshall would be needed to track him in some way.

Timothy [00:38:35] Yup. That would have been great, because everyone on your show is so good at comedy and but not acknowledging the comedy without pointing it out, which is kind of what we were doing a little bit. Nothing more fun than taking someone who's like, known for a sitcom and putting them in like a cool, gritty, like, comedic performance on our show. That was always my favorite thing.

Angela [00:38:57] I always love that when I watch a show to see someone from a world that's like totally different. Right. I think your character was that on The Office, too, for a lot of people. That was really cool.

Jenna [00:39:07] Yeah, because your time on the Office was after Deadwood, but before Justified.

Timothy [00:39:12] I'll take your word for it.

Angela [00:39:16] So if you had watched Deadwood.

Timothy [00:39:18] It's all a bit of a blur.

Jenna [00:39:19] Yeah. As a Deadwood fan, which I was. You know, we had that was a thing that we did on the show a lot. Like we had a lot of folks who had been on The Sting. Wait, is that the name of the show? No, The Wire.

Timothy [00:39:30] I was going to say, this is like, wow.

Jenna [00:39:33] We're professional.

Angela [00:39:34] Timothy, this is like, can I just tell you, this is our last show of 2024.

Jenna [00:39:40] Can you feel it?

Timothy [00:39:41] You had Redford, Newman. Who else did you have on this thing? Gleason.

Jenna [00:39:46] He was in it.

Timothy [00:39:47]  Amazing.

Jenna [00:39:48] They were great on the show.

Timothy [00:39:49] I forgot Jackie Gleason was in The Sting.

Jenna [00:39:51] Have you watched The Sting in a while because it holds up and it's fantastic.

Timothy [00:39:55] I have.

Jenna [00:39:56] One of my favorite movies.

Timothy [00:39:57] I would look and I keep a list of things and I want to say I watched it like a year or two ago.

Angela [00:40:03] I haven't seen it in a while.

Timothy [00:40:03] Really solid. All right. So good. Just wonderful performances. I mean, just. Wow, that ending. It's just like you love everybody, right? Yeah. When they're all closing up shop, giving them a little smile.

Jenna [00:40:16] On the nose.

Angela [00:40:18] Now I need a rewatch.

Timothy [00:40:19] So. Wonderful.

Angela [00:40:30] I found a little something on YouTube. That I want to talk to you about.

Timothy [00:40:36] Okay.

Angela [00:40:37] Well.

Timothy [00:40:37] I'm leaning in, so everybody's leaning in. You should have teased that, by the way. Put that in the front of the show. I found a little thing on YouTube I want to ask you about. But we'll get that in a minute. We're get to that later. And then people really stick around.

Angela [00:40:56] Stay tuned.

Jenna [00:40:56] Why do you think we've lost them? What are you saying?

Timothy [00:41:00] All right. What do you got on you? By the way, let's circle back to that thing you were saying on YouTube.

Angela [00:41:05] Yes.

Timothy [00:41:05] See what I did there?

Angela [00:41:06] Thank you. Thank you. Could you just do this for us? We have some ads for you later, too.

Timothy [00:41:11] I'd love to sit in on the ads.

Angela [00:41:13] You're so funny when you read ads on Conan. I love it.

Timothy [00:41:16] Thank you.

Angela [00:41:17] That made me laugh so hard.

Angela [00:41:22] Okay. YouTube. Here we go.  It was April 2015.

Timothy [00:41:27] Okay.

Angela [00:41:28] You were a guest on Conan O'Brien. Justified. The last episode was that night. There was going to be a party. You bring onto Conan a mason jar of whiskey from Kentucky, and you and Conan and Andy all drink whiskey during the interview.

Timothy [00:41:50] Yeah.

Angela [00:41:51] I was the second guess that night. And I came out, and you poured me a whiskey.

Timothy [00:41:59] You know what? You didn't realize?

Angela [00:42:01] I was like, Surely this isn't real whiskey. And I took a big slug of it.

Timothy [00:42:07] Yeah, I remember.

Angela [00:42:08] And I was like, wow, that's real whiskey. So that is the first time I've ever drank on television. And I rewatched the interview. You totally are great. You, first of all, that you guys were sipping. And then I come out, I take my slug of whiskey and I am so, like, whack a doodle.

Timothy [00:42:33] I don't know. You're being tough on yourself.

Angela [00:42:36] No, no, no. It was really good whiskey, and I totally thought it was a bit. And I didn't think it was actual whiskey.

Timothy [00:42:43] Yeah, we committed.

Angela [00:42:44] You guys are very committed. Timothy, we shared with our listeners that you and I recently connected at our mutual friend's birthday party.

Timothy [00:42:53] Yeah.

Jenna [00:42:54] And I got to meet your wife of 30 years.

Timothy [00:42:57] Yup. Don't mess me up. 30 something, I think. Go ahead.

Jenna [00:43:02] She is amazing.

Timothy [00:43:03] Thank you.

Timothy [00:43:05] Thank you. That's nice of you to say.

Jenna [00:43:07] Okay.

Timothy [00:43:08] I agree.

Jenna [00:43:09] We got a fan question from Kim P. in Chicago who said, the sexiest thing about you is your long relationship with your wife. Would you be willing to tell us your meet cute?

Timothy [00:43:21] We're separating.

Jenna [00:43:22] No, you are not. You are not. I have to assume that when you met her, you knew immediately that you needed to marry this person. She is one of the most phenomenal human beings I have ever met. One of the strongest, best first impressions a human has ever made on me. Your wife is like she is. Alexis is like a gem of a human being.

Timothy [00:43:55] That's lovely to hear. I will pass that on to her.

Jenna [00:43:59] I mean, how did you do it?

Timothy [00:44:00] She's never seen anything I've ever been in. And so.

Jenna [00:44:04] But that's kind of true, isn't it? That she doesn't like, really engage in the whole, Hollywood thing?

Timothy [00:44:14] Yeah, no. We met in college.

Angela [00:44:16] Where did you go to college?

Timothy [00:44:17] We went to USC junior year of college. Yeah, we were 20 and we were in a class oceanography.

Angela [00:44:26] That's a cool class.

Timothy [00:44:27]  It was like a science, you know, requirement. And I was swimming and I see all the athletes. Basically, we had, you know, the athletics gather counts. They all said, you're taking oceanography like that's your science and it's super fun class and it's really popular. This guy Pipkin, professor there. It was a fun class anyway.

Angela [00:44:47] Is it like the easy science class?

Timothy [00:44:49] I think that was the idea. Like all the athletes were like, You should take oceanography because that will satisfy your science. And it's kind of a very easy class and it's popular. They probably also just liked all the athletes taking the same one class, so we were all getting the same tutor. You were all being tutored to get through it.

Angela [00:45:05] We had a class like that they called Shake and Bake because it was earthquakes and natural disasters. And all the athletes were in it. There you go. So that's your shake and bake?

Timothy [00:45:14] Yeah.  You got a field trip to Catalina Island. To Catalina. So you go out on the boat and go out there and go swimming and snorkeling. Catalina Because SC's got, like, a oceanography institute out there.

Angela [00:45:28] That's cool. Yeah. So she was in the class.

Timothy [00:45:30] She was in the class. You? Yeah. She used to come in late. One of the last people to come in. So I'd always see her coming in. And to your point, I began referring to her as my girlfriend. We'd never met. And but I was like, That's my girlfriend. I need to save her a spot because she comes in late and so she'll have to come up, sit next to me. So, yeah, that's we had met taking oceanography class. We had friends in common. Yeah, we first met. I introduced myself to her after class.

Angela [00:46:06] That's so cute.

Jenna [00:46:08] And the rest is history.

Timothy [00:46:10] Yep.

Jenna [00:46:11] All right. You've been so generous with your time, The last thing that we have--

Timothy [00:46:17] It's been a pleasure. I appreciate the invitation.

Jenna [00:46:18] Thank you. The last thing we do on the show --.

Timothy [00:46:22] Season five.

Jenna [00:46:22] Season five of office ladies. The last thing we do on the show are call sheet questions. These are questions that we would ask members of our cast and crew. And then we would put their little answers on.

Angela [00:46:33] The back of the call sheet.

Jenna [00:46:34] Yeah, we'd put their answers on the back of our call sheets.

Angela [00:46:37] We didn't do this like the production office did it, but it was such a fun thing on the set of The Office. And it's how people like you learned a little bit about the cast or crew.

Timothy [00:46:49] So you guys are dominating the world with your show and just and just making all of us and also with the lovely kind of wonderful atmosphere and feel good, the camaraderie.

Angela [00:47:00] It was like a family.  Yeah. Yeah. So you want to kick it off, lady?

Jenna [00:47:05] Sure.

Timothy [00:47:06] Okay.

Jenna [00:47:06] First question is, what was your first job? It could be your first paid acting job. Or maybe your first job in general.

Timothy [00:47:16] As far as I can remember, it's I think we would be accepting two answers, either lifeguarding or swim coaching. I think I yeah, those are probably the two jobs I kind of did when I was growing up is to give swim lessons. Yeah. You know, cause I was a swimmer and then. Yeah. All right, so we're going to go with lifeguarding.

Angela [00:47:38] Lifeguard guarding.  All right. Do you play a musical instrument?

Timothy [00:47:43] I play guitar. Not well, but I play. Well, I played it a couple of times for a movie. I never got into it for a couple of different jobs, but learned it well enough for the job. And then just a few years ago. Either pandemic or strike. I mean, just not long ago, my daughter, who's a very good singer songwriter, she was like, Dad, you should play guitar. Play guitar with me. So we started I started playing guitar with her and that got me into it.

Angela [00:48:14] That is so sweet.

Timothy [00:48:16]  I owe her some things.

Angela [00:48:20] Next question. What's a place that you've been to that you absolutely loved?

Timothy [00:48:27] Well, I love the Carmel, the sort of Northern California. Carmel has always been a very they can put as many bad art galleries and kids, but I still I love it. I don't care how many they that's how my great that places they can shove they've shoved so much bad art in that little community and I'm still like yeah it's great. I love it. Can't ruin it. I just love that coast. And that is always I've always had a soft spot for it. And we used to go there as kids, not so not far from Modesto. And my wife and I always go, we honeymoon there. I love that area.

Jenna [00:49:06] All right. I've got the next one. What do you like to do on the weekends?

Timothy [00:49:11] These days?

Jenna [00:49:12] Sure. Yeah.

Timothy [00:49:15] So we I swim early Saturday morning like the routine. I swim early Saturday.

Jenna [00:49:20] You still swim?

Timothy [00:49:21] Still swim. I've gotten way back into I don't know why. It's like I think my wife dragged me. I've always swam. But a few years ago, I was working in Tribeca with Alex Winter and in New York, and my wife is like, we found a pool. I usually do. And then there was a master's program there, and she was like, Let's do masters. You know, you kind of like are with a group and there's a coach. And as I got here, I want to do that. I want to come. And then I did it and then I love it. I'm like, Yeah, So now, yeah, swim or so swim usually Saturday mornings. Lately we have we have a my wife and I share an art studio with our son. If we're really a mellow weekend, we'll go, we'll go. We like a Saturday in the art studios. Kind of great stuff. I mean, if we're just hanging in town, dog walks, our kids are. We're empty nesters, so let's just chill like we do whatever we're done with the like.

Jenna [00:50:23] Driving everyone everywhere.

Timothy [00:50:24] A tennis tournament or whatever. Yeah. Which is kind of nice.

Angela [00:50:29] That sounds really chill.

Timothy [00:50:31] I played tennis over the weekend. I played with my kid. I played with my brother. Yes. Weekends, weekends, now are pretty chill. Sunday more like just Sunday's stick around the house.

Angela [00:50:45] Yeah. Like chore day kind of chores. Like do you have a Sunday chore?

Timothy [00:50:52] Angela? I'm in show business. I grew up doing so many chores. Did you guys, were you a chore person growing up, did you have your chores?

Angela [00:51:04] Yes, I had chored.

Timothy [00:51:04] We had major chores. Major chores. My buddies were like, Dude, how as like I just got to do my chores and then I'm free. And they were.

Angela [00:51:13] Yeah, yeah.

Timothy [00:51:15] And then now my kids, I don't think they. I don't think they know they'd be like chore, what is that? Look it up in the dictionary.

Angela [00:51:20] I know, I know. We just we decided to, like, have a chore day, and we told our kids they have to load the dishwasher.

Timothy [00:51:28] That's it?

Angela [00:51:29] Yes.

Timothy [00:51:30] My God. You know, my chores were growing up? Load the dishwasher. That's a routine. That's not a chore.

Jenna [00:51:37] Yes. Thank you.

Timothy [00:51:39] That's a.

Angela [00:51:41] They're 14. But let me tell you--

Timothy [00:51:42] Wait, that's still. What do you. How do you mean that? But they're 14.

Angela [00:51:47] But like why? Like we're in Los Angeles. Not like I listen in Archer City, Texas, chores were like, go you. I had friends. I had to milk the cows, you know, and.

Timothy [00:51:56] To go collect eggs. We had to clean out ponds. We had to like mow lawns and we had to, like, prune and weed and like, we had, like, chores. There was like, there's wheelbarrow involved. Anyway, we had a wheelbarrow involved. There was something that took gasoline.

Angela [00:52:13] My dad, where he baled hay.

Timothy [00:52:16] We had to like, you know, there was something involved you might not get. Like there might be blisters.

Angela [00:52:20] You know, I'm not saying.

Timothy [00:52:21] There was a shed. We had to go out to the shed.

Angela [00:52:24] Okay, fine.

Timothy [00:52:25] Keeping them grounded.

Angela [00:52:26] Well, anyway.

Timothy [00:52:29] Load the dishwasher.

Angela [00:52:29] I want to tell you, it was a shit-show for when I open the dishwasher. I was like, what the hell happened in here? Everything was just thrown in there.

Timothy [00:52:38] I do remember the moments with my kids and when they were pretty old and I'm like, Could you just sweep this up? And, you know, and then, you know, and I started watching I'm not even going to name which one because  it was pretty much all of them had this moment where I was watching them sweep and I'm like. Who taught you to sweep? What is that? What? Where did you learn that? And I realize I've failed.

Angela [00:53:01] I haven't taught them.

Timothy [00:53:02] It's my fault. I mean, I can't blame them for not knowing how to sweep. Clearly, that's something you have to kind of. At some point.

Angela [00:53:10] Someone has to show you.

Timothy [00:53:12] My God. It was so embarrassing. I was like, That's not how you sweep. Like it? How is that? I thought that was just something you knew.

Angela [00:53:19] No, no, it's not natural.

Jenna [00:53:21] I have a new thing that I just implemented with my kids. I want to get your take on it. All right.

Timothy [00:53:26] Let's hear it.

Jenna [00:53:27] So. I heard this on a podcast. Which when I told my kids that, they were like, ugh mom, heard a podcast.

Angela [00:53:37] Mom and her podcast.

Jenna [00:53:38] And her ideas. So the thought behind it is rather than make them a chore list that they have to do, you teach them how to notice what needs to be done and do it because the mental labor of making the list and saying what has to be done, like that's half the chore. So what you're wanting to do is like raise people who can see with their own eyes what needs to be done. So I have this thing where I.

Timothy [00:54:12] This is a podcast called Pipe Dreams.

Angela [00:54:15] Pipe Dreams for Parents.

Timothy [00:54:18] Pipe Dream for Parents.

Angela [00:54:19] Next on the Office Ladies Network.

Timothy [00:54:21] Is pipe dreams for parents who don't live practically.

Jenna [00:54:25] So here's what I did.

Timothy [00:54:26] This kind of thing feels like this is like right next to Wholefoods, like where you go down the aisle in Whole Foods and there's like just stuff in there that's supposed to do things. Like, how is that even? That doesn't work. We all just lost our minds since we walked in this place.

Jenna [00:54:40] I set a timer for 15 minutes.

Timothy [00:54:42] And they have to notice for.

Jenna [00:54:43] 15 minutes. They have to walk around.

Timothy [00:54:46] And notice.

Jenna [00:54:47] What needs to be done and do it.

Angela [00:54:49] How's that working?

Timothy [00:54:51] And then they're done after 15 minutes.

Jenna [00:54:53] Yeah.

Angela [00:54:54] This is making my dishwasher thing look hard.

Timothy [00:54:57] Cause I got to say, I mean, I hope they turn out. I do. You know that. And by the way, I feel the same about my. My kids are in their 20s. I have a pretty good idea, but that seems crazy compared to how now I mean, I'm not saying what my kids you know, I got I think there's some areas they kind of screwed up, but. They just said, like, this is what needs to be done. That's hilarious. 15 minutes, walk around. Notice, I mean, the gag there is they take 12 or 13 minutes to notice something and then they're like, they got two minutes to do it. They got it. Still looking around. So look around. Just I've noticed a couple of things, but I want to keep kind of hoping there might be something better. That's amazing.

Jenna [00:55:49] Alright.

Timothy [00:55:50] I thought we got I think we hit our stride somewhere where we realized if we just wrote that routines, that was the easiest way.

Angela [00:55:58] Like write it on the board. Your sort of task.

Timothy [00:56:00] Is what you're doing Mondays, what you're doing, Tuesdays where you're doing Wednesday. Just these are the tasks.

Angela [00:56:05] Little bit.

Timothy [00:56:06] Because otherwise you are constantly saying, you know, Hey, I need you to could you just go do this? Could you? And they're like, my God, you're just going to throw that on me whenever. So is more like.

Angela [00:56:16] Read the board.

Timothy [00:56:16]  Here's the board. These are the things that are going to be done. This is, you know, this is this is yours. This is your sisters. This is whatever. Yeah. And it was it is L.A. It's not Modesto like, so it's not like they're out mowing. I mean.

Angela [00:56:32] No.

Timothy [00:56:33] No, we were we were like working, you know, we.

Angela [00:56:36] We had like.

Jenna [00:56:37] I pulled weeds. I picked up dog poop.

Timothy [00:56:40] Yeah.

Jenna [00:56:40] You know?  I mean, I cleaned the toilets. I was bathrooms. That was my job in my house growing up.

Timothy [00:56:47] That's. Yeah, I think just three boys. And we were just out in the yard working. We had daily chores and then weekends were like.

Jenna [00:56:54] Yeah, all hands on deck.

Timothy [00:56:56] In my memory is a few hours before I was free to go hang out. Yeah, yeah. It was always my buddies making plans. And then they're like, You'll join us like around noon, 1:00 when you're done, and they're going over the canal to open up to water. I'd have to let the water into the fields and water the fields.

Angela [00:57:16] And those are real chores.

Timothy [00:57:18] We had real chores. Yeah.

Angela [00:57:20] Did you take 15 minutes to look around?

Timothy [00:57:23] 15 minutes to look around.

Jenna [00:57:25] Just see what needed to be done.

Angela [00:57:27] I think in theory, this is a really good thing. All right. Our final question.

Jenna [00:57:33] And I'll let you go. Okay. What is your favorite midnight snack?

Timothy [00:57:38] I'm going to go with. I guess I'll go with, like, peanut butter. Yeah. Lately, probably peanut butter. Like peanut butter if there's, like.

Jenna [00:57:46] Just straight up with a spoon?

Timothy [00:57:49] We have gotten to this place where we don't have a lot of us. Like, back in the day, I'd be like, ice cream. But now I'm like, I don't really do that anymore. I like that. That's. Isn't that sad? You get to a certain age. You have memories of midnight snacks. Yeah. Yeah, I remember. I used to eat a pint of ice cream. Now it's like, was this gross or disgusting? What's wrong with you?

Angela [00:58:13] You got to get up and swim.

Timothy [00:58:14] Exactly. So now, like, we don't like, I think, like, right now and in at the house, the only thing that we have that I will definitely reach for is I bought a bunch of. I was in Finland working. I brought so much good licorice home. So I like reach for the licorice. But when that's gone, that's it. I'm screwed. I'm just like, well, maybe some peanut butter and honey, I mean, really, my midnight snack is probably just like bourbon. That's my midnight snack. It's just the. It's just the liquor cabinet.

Jenna [00:58:44] Bourbon on the rocks.

Timothy [00:58:45] Yeah, exactly.

Jenna [00:58:46] Yeah. Thank you so much.

Timothy [00:58:47]  This is a pleasure, ladies, If I can call you that.

Angela [00:58:51] Yeah, call us ladies.

Timothy [00:58:52] It's been a pleasure.

Jenna [00:58:53] Thank you so much.

Timothy [00:58:54] Thanks for having me.

Angela [00:58:55] Well, we're going to get your dates that you can travel so when we go on the road.

Timothy [00:58:58] Awesome.

Angela [00:58:58] Yeah. All right. So thanks.

Timothy [00:59:00] All right. Yeah.

Timothy [00:59:01] It's my pleasure.

Angela [00:59:06] I mean, how fun.

Jenna [00:59:08] He is so funny. I know. And Ang, you actually ended up going to his tennis charity event.

Angela [00:59:15] I did. You know, after the interview, we were talking a little bit before he left, and he was like, I'm serious. If you want to play, you should come. He got my phone number. And on my drive home, he called me and he was like, Hey, I'm about to text you all the info. I was like, okay. It was the next day and lady, I wore my songs of Scranton t shirt to represent the Office Ladies team. I was paired up with Timothy's sister in law, Robin, and I played with this great group of gals, and I met a lot of his family. It was very much a family affair. Plus, there were some fantastic tennis players, like jaw dropping, amazing tennis and some familiar faces like Joel McHale.

Jenna [00:59:55] Yes.

Angela [00:59:56] I just want you guys all to know that Joel has a really good crosscourt forehand. Although. And Joel, I have given him crap about this. He did get schooled. On the court 1 or 2 times. Okay. But that's okay. There was these tennis players who were really good. I was not in the like, super good. I was in like the medium court.

Jenna [01:00:15] Is that what they call it? Super good. Medium good. Not so good?

Angela [01:00:20]  That is not how they did it. They had if you want to know, they had like four point fives and fours and three point fives and I was on the 3.5 court.

Jenna [01:00:29] Okay.

Angela [01:00:29] And threes. But I was yeah. So I was 3.5 is good lady.

Jenna [01:00:33] That was my GPA in college so.

Angela [01:00:35] That's very good.

Jenna [01:00:36] Served me well there.

Angela [01:00:38] But it was a really fun day. And thank you Timothy, for including me and Robin for introducing me to your tennis gals. And you know, it was just a lot of great people coming together for a good cause. I will share in our stories. But like Timothy said in his interview, all the proceeds went to Center for Reflective Communities, and I'll put a swipe up so you can learn more about it.

Jenna [01:00:57] Well, Angela, another follow up that we should give is that Timothy did go and see Rain's production, the closing night of Waiting for Godot and loved it.

Angela [01:01:08] Loved it. Took his mom.

Jenna [01:01:10] Texted us to update us, which I thought was so nice. Hey, ladies, by the way, we loved it. Well, a big thank you to Timothy for coming in the studio to talk with us. We hope you enjoyed this episode. And thank you to everyone who sent in questions. We just love hearing from you.
